The Newmarket is woven from 100% pure new wool, a strong, durable, and insulating fibre that produces practical and hardwearing throws and blankets. Complete with stylish fringing at either end, the Newmarket adds additional interest and texture to a room, whilst providing warmth on a chilly evening. As one of the last remaining fully vertical mills in the UK, we spin the yarn, weave the fabric and finish each and every throw and blanket by hand, all on one site in West Yorkshire. This gives us complete control of the manufacturing process and allows us to draw on the skills and craftsmanship learnt by our teams over the past 237 years.
John Atkinson has a long and impressive history of manufacturing England’s finest blankets. Our story began in Sowerby Bridge in 1828 when John Atkinson & Sons started weaving high quality wool blankets before the reign of Queen Victoria. The John Atkinson brand was later acquired by Wormalds & Walkers of Dewsbury, who also manufactured the historical Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket and in 1983 Hainsworth bought Wormalds & Walkers, moving production to the mill in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, where it remains today.
